April Fools

Happy April Fool's Everyone!!! I love having fun and especially playing pranks on other. Every wonder how April Fools began and how other countries celebrate the day? I did some research and found that the earliest recorded association with April Fools dates back to 1392!! I think having a good laugh is always needed, and when it's at another person's expense....well sometimes that just makes it even better. Us Americans love getting a good laugh through others and some do it all year long. In England jokes are only played in the morning, the victim of the joke is called a noodle and it was considered to be bad luck to play a joke on someone after noon. While in Portugal, April Fools falls on the Sunday and Monday before Lent. In their celebration many people throw flour at their friends. Now that does not sound too bad......throwing flour at each other! Kind of fun and an opportunity to just let loose, but can you imagine what a mess that would make?

Then there are those that no matter what you do they will not budge - meaning that they just do not get the holiday. They are grouchy, unhappy and get mad when you try and play a trick on them. Seriously, that actually just makes it all more the fun!! LOL!!!

Wordless Wednesday

While we were out eating last week on our vacation - we had the servers bring our youngest son a surprise for his birthday. There was an elderly couple sitting next to us who over heard and started to talk with us. They loved the kids and said how much they missed their grandchildren. On their way out they gave Christian a dollar for his birthday, and gave our daughter one also. She had walked around the table, I was not sure what she was doing - then looked down to find two pieces of dollar bill in front of me. I asked her what she was doing and she said that she simply wanted to "share her money" ......... she was giving everyone a piece :)

Fiber One Yogurt

**Disclosure: The opinions below are of my own, your opinion may vary. The VIP coupon, giftcard, information and additional gift card to give away were all provided by Safeway and Fiber One through MyBlogSpark.

Best selling author and food expert Lisa Lillien, AKA Hungry Girl has given her "seal of approval" to the new Fiber One Yogurt, the only leading nonfat yogurt with 50 calories and 5 grams of fiber (20 percent of the Recommended Daily Value). This was my first time trying Fiber One. It was rich and creamy, but did have that after taste of the sugar substitute or what it tasted like anyway. Maybe it's because I am not use to it and it is one of those tastes you have to get acquainted to. The serving size was just perfect for what I needed. After about a week of eating Fiber One, the taste did seem to grow on me, but the after-taste was just not something I would be able to acquire. I loved the flavors and the creaminess of the yogurt. I am not a breakfast eater and usually will only eat a bowl of vanilla yogurt mixed with sliced almonds and some chocolate chips to get my chocolate fix. When on hand I also mix in some bananas and strawberries.

Looking to add some extra fiber in your diet or maybe get the fiber that you've been missing? MyBlogSpark, Safeway, Fiber One has teamed up together to give one of our readers the same gift pack they provided me for this review. Head on over to our giveaway page for your chance to win a Safeway $50 giftcard!

Red Roof Inn

During our planning process for our vacation, we were looking for an affordable, family friendly motel chain that had locations throughout the state so that we would only have to make one reservation. I love vacationing, so also kept in mind that you pretty much get what you pay for and that maybe paying a little extra might just be worth it in this case. I am very picky when it comes to where my children and I will sleep - which I am sure most mom's are. The Red Roof Inn seemed to provide just what we need - a comfortable, clean place to sleep and shower. After all we are on vacation and wouldn't be spending much time in our room except for just that. Did you know that Red Roof Inn had suites in some of their hotels?? Below are some pictures of our room. It was perfect with the kids and even had closing doors that separated the rooms - with a TV in each room. It had it's own little kitchen area with a refrigerator, microwave, sink and coffee maker. I have to mention the towels - these were actually soft and big enough to fit around me!! LOL! Most towels at most motels have been washed so many times that they are so rough and tiny too. The only downside I found at this chain is that only one of the three we stayed at had laundry facilities. We ended up getting back in our room late that night and had expected to do laundry - then found out they had not laundry room so ended up having to go to a coin operated wash. Other than that it was a great affordable stay!

The Red Roof Inn has been around since 1973 offering guests a clean, comfortable room at an affordable price and trusted by trusted by many. You can be sure to find one along your route with 345 properties in 36 states. The Inn seems to run many promotions from time to time. We took advantage of the Denny's Promotion they were running throughout the month of March which allowed us to receive a coupon for a buy one get one free Grand Slam at Denny's. You can also sign up for their RediCard where you'll enjoy special member-only benefits. You can visit www.redroof.com for rates and more information.

**Disclosure: Our family was provided a room at no charge. This did not affect our review or outcome of this feature. All opinions are of our own and your opinion may vary.

Henry's BBQ

When I am out of town I do not like to eat at everyday, normal places I can eat at home. I like to try and find the hole in the wall places, the places the locals go to eat. The tourists spots can get quite pricey - so I'll usually stop people to ask where is the "hot" spot to eat. We had just spent a few hours at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and were starving!! We drove around a bit but there did not seem to be much going on, either that or we just could not find the "local" spot. We had some RedBox DVD's we had to return, so stopped at the local grocery store. While we were there we asked the cashier where the spot was.....we drove by and it did not seem happening so ended up driving around a bit - which seemed like another half hour we wasted. We ended back at Henry's BBQ and so happy we did - this has to be the best BBQ food I have every had!

The first night we ate dinner there. The kids and I had the BBQ chicken. The bbq sauce had a little kick to it, maybe a little too much for the kids - but I loved it. The chicken itself was very moist with a nice crunchy skin. My husband got the double burger. Just looking at it, I had to try it - there is nothing better than a good juicy bbq burger! I took one bite and it literally melted in my mouth. This was the perfect burger! For the french fry lovers these were pretty good fries! They had a seasoning on them that made them even better! We enjoyed this place so much we had to go back for lunch the next day!

Henry is there most of the time cooking most of the main meals on the outside bbq, with a smaller bbq indoors to reheat the food. They even grind their own beef their daily. The prices are very budget friendly with a burger and fries setting you back only $6.50 and even includes a side of beef and bean chili. This is a must stop if going through Monterey Bay!!

Ronald McDonald Care Mobile

Did you know that tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease today (source: Oral Health America) More than 51 million hours of schooling are lost annually due to the lack of dental care among children. One of our stops along the way to San Francisco was a visit to the Dental Ronald McDonald Care Mobile in Richmond, CA. We were so amazed at our visit to the Ronald McDonald House a few months ago that we were eager to visit the mobile care unit! Not receiving dental care can lead to a more serious illness, and not only effect your health but your self-esteem as well. The first thing that most people notice is your smile and not having confidence about your smile can lead to low self-esteem and depression. There are only two Ronald McDonald Care Mobile Dental offices in California - this one in Richmond, and one in Santa Clara.

Once inside, we were amazed at how it looked just like an actual dentist office - maybe even a bit better looking than some I've seen..... They do more than just an exam here - they can do a full cleaning, x-rays, and even some minor dental work for those that need it. If it's major work that needs to be done they will refer the patient out to a children's specialist. Many of the patients seen here have not seen a dentist in a very long time; and some not at all. Lack of dental care has a profound impact on not only the patient, but the community as well. It can lead to lower educational attainment, reduced family income, lost worker productivity, and a strained national and world economy.

A big thank you to the Ronald McDonald Charities, John Muir Health & Chris for taking time out of their busy schedules to talk to us a bit about the amazing work they continue to do everyday with the Ronald McDonald Mobile Dental Care Unit.....it's like a dentist on an 18 wheeler!

Seagulls.....

The Sea Gull v.s. My Son

This is now our least favorite bird!! Today we spent the day at Fisherman's Wharf in South San Francisco. At one of the piers there are sea lions that lay and swim near the docks. It is a major attraction - a big part of the wharf. So we took the kids down to see the sea lions. On our way there, we noticed Ben & Jerry's was giving away free ice cream cones today, so stopped and each got an ice cream cone. Once we got to the area where the sea lions were, we stopped to watch them. There was a huge crowd, as always. We were all eating our ice cream and all of a sudden this sea gull swooped down and grabbed my son's ice cream cone right out of his hands and flew off to one of the docks and swallowed the whole thing - paper and all.....I felt so sad for my son! That was so mean - it's like stealing candy from a kid on Halloween - it's just not right!

Safari West

Safari West is home to over 400 exotic mammals and birds on 400 acres of land in Santa Rosa, CA. These animals are given a chance to live in their natural habitat and gives us an opportunity to observe them first hand and up close. This is not just like any other zoo where you walk around looking at the animals in cages, but you actually get up close and personal with many of them. This wildlife preserve was established by Peter Lang in 1989 who had an ongoing mission to preserve wildlife through breeding, education, research and public interaction.
The above picture is from our jeep tour of the property. This is really how close you come to the animals, it's their land...and your just a guest driving by! It is home to cheetahs, lemurs, cape buffalo, zebras, and so many more. I have to say, the tour is not exactly what we thought it would be - we expected more adventure, more excitement and a more variety of animals. We started off the tour with a walk around a few of the caged animals - typical to a walk at the zoo. We visited birds, the cheetahs, and the lemurs - which were out in the open, but close enough to walk to. Then we hopped in the jeep, with everyone taking turns to sit up top. Our youngest daughter was not tall enough yet, so I stayed down below with her, while my husband and son sat up top first. The terrain was a bit rough, but I think that was mostly due to all the recent rain the area has had, there was alot of mud and water puddles to go through. That actually made the tour a bit more exciting - especially for the kids who loved the 4-wheeling through the mud! The animals were very spread out, but then they have so much free land to roam there were times we had to go in search of the animals. The tour in the jeep lasted about two hours which turned out perfect because as soon as we were done dinner was about ready.

The area in the above picture is where lunch and dinner is cooked and served buffet style. It's all you can eat, which is what I would expect it to be at the price they charge!! Dinner is $29 for adults and $17 per child. The night we were there they were serving BBQ Chicken (white meat), rice, twice baked potatoes, green beans, salad, and soup. The food was OK, but not as good as we were looking forward too. The chicken was great - always gotta love BBQ Chicken! But again, it was really over priced......I would never pay that much for what was served - really should be half that! Loved the fire pit and eating outdoors with a view of the animals and the scenery.

The tents you see in the above picture was the most amazing part of the trip!! They call them their African Safari Tents. These are heavily lined with canvas and have thick plastic windows and are imported from Africa. The furniture is mostly entirely crafted from on site wood. The beds were huge, so soft and very very comfortable!! I wanted one for my own house! I would not recommend a visit during the winter months as even with our stay it got very cold!! Each tent does have an electric blanket on each bed as well as a wall heater which keeps it comfortable at night. The windows are covered by Velcro flaps which is very cool - especially during the warmer months you can keep them open and have a view of the animals and all the open land. There are no TVs or phones in the tents, which make it more meaningful and gives you more time to really enjoy your visit. They also have a lake on site and each night during the warmer months they will meet you out there in the evening to feed the catfish - which the kids loved!!

All in all it can be a pretty amazing experience, but is a slower pace and not as adventurous as we expected. Another downside is the price - it can be very expensive, and with the economy the way it is, it would make it tough for many to visit. The safari tent is it's own experience which I would recommend to anyone just looking for that experience without traveling all the way to Africa. The kids were a bit bored after taking the tour, it would be nice to see them have more activities or stuff to keep the kids busy. Honestly I would go just as a couple and take advantage of the beautiful Safari Tents and scenery. This is not something I would plan if coming in from out of town, I would have rather spend more time visiting family or sightseeing the historic spots around town......

Reservations are required and the following prices are listed as of today -

  • Safari Tours - $68 Adults, $30 for children 3-12, $10 for children 1-2
  • Luxury Safari Tents range from $200 - $295 per night
  • Lunch is $19 Adults & $14 Child / Dinner is $29 Adults & $17 Child

Vacation Update

So if you have been following us on Twitter or You Tube then you sort of have an idea of where we've been and where we're headed. I am writing this from the car, so will make this quick just wanted to up date you all. Will upload pics tonight and hopefully more video!

We are leaving Safari West, which all in all I was not too impressed with. I think it's a bit overpriced and not as "exciting" as it should or can be. I will go into that more later.

We are on our way now to the Ronald McDonald Mobile Care Clinic in Richmond to take a tour and meet the amazing staff. We'll have a feature on that as well coming up soon.

The drive here in Sonoma County is beautiful, green and lots of open air! The Lincoln is comfortable and roomy! We almost got stuck this morning at Safari West!! I tried turning on the child proof locks and ended up we got the latch stuck and could not close the door. Of course I did not have any cell phone service, but luckily the mechanic was able to fix it with no problem!

We we are about 23 min away so I'll end this here. Will have more time tonight to update more and in more detail. Also stay tuned for a fun giveaway we'll be doing with Fresh & Easy!!

vroom vroom....and away.....

Here we go, we have been very busy packing and getting ready to leave tomorrow. We have set up a You Tube page which you can follow here www.youtube.com/user/HulaHoopingMom

We will be posting videos along the way and interacting with you all as much as possible! If there is something you would like to see, have a question about a place we visited, or would just like to leave some feedback, please do!!! This video thing is new to me so I could use all the tips I could get! I have to admit I am a bit nervous also, as I am not one to jump in front of a camera! LOL!!

We'll also try to have a few giveaways along the way, which will probably be about our trip, something in the video or just a random follower that keeps up with us......

We love comments and want to involve you all as much as possible, so please feel free to comment away, ask questions, give us some love, tell us what we're doing wrong, or make a request! We want to hear it all - the good & the bad!

CO Poisoning

Carbon Monoxide is a silent killer and can take a life within minutes. CO is a poisonous gas that can be emitted by common household items - like a gas furnace or water heater. What makes this so deadly is that you cannot see it, smell it or taste it. You would think most everyone would have a in their home, in fact you would think they would be more common that the fire alarm. Shockingly only 50% of Americans have CO alarms installed in their homes and 61% of Americans can't identify any signs of CO poisoning risk in their home.

This "silent killer" kills 500 people and sends 20,000 more to the hospital each year. Commissioned by Underwriters Laboratories -a 115 year old product safety organization, the survey overall finds that Americans might be over confident in their ability to protect themselves and their family from CO poisoning.

UL has put together an extensive list of safety tips you can follow to protect yourself and your loved ones against CO. Some of their safety tips include -
  • Have a qualified technician inspect fuel burning appliances once a year
  • Protect your home by purchasing and installing a CO alarm
  • Be prepared should your CO alarm detect a problem
  • Know the signs of potential CO poisoning

Buzzed Driving IS Drunk Driving

St. Patricks Day, a day that is thought of so differently between adults and children. While many of the children are thinking leprechaun's, many of the adults are thinking about where they are going to go party and get their drink on. Personally, I do not drink and I feel very strongly about those who drink and drive at the same time. As a mother as well, I am so tired hearing about drunk drivers who hurt or even kill others and they always seem to be the ones unharmed. I can seriously go on and on about how I personally feel, although I want to get the main message across in this post. Many who work full time will be heading out to happy hour after work or meeting up later that night for drinks, while at the same time many of us are running errands with our children. You may think that a couple drinks will not hurt and may not affect you. Buzzed driving is drunk driving!

I am urging all of you to please plan ahead - if you are going out in a group - designate one person to not drink, and if you going out alone or with a friend - plan on taking a cab home that night. Even if you will not be celebrating this St. Patricks Day, keep in mind that in 2008, 1,179 people in other vehicles were killed in crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers. To learn more about the impact buzzed driving can have on a life, please watch this important video about the personal and financial repercussions of getting a DUI http://buzzeddriving.adcouncil.org/sign.php#video

Remember: Buzzed driving IS drunk driving. Plan ahead and ask your loved ones to do the same. For more information visit Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving on Facebook and Twitter (http://twitter.com/buzzeddriving)

**Disclosure: This is part of a campaign through Global Influence and The National Traffic Safety Administration, as well as the AD Council to help bring awareness that buzzed driving is drunk driving.

Talking Beauty......

Kroger has announced their new beauty care line for women seeking effortless beauty. Personally I cannot believe that Korger did not do this long ago - but I was so excited to be given the opportunity to try their new product line. I have always searched for the "perfect" hair products for my hair. My hair is long and thick - which means I have to wash it every day or I feel like it's dirty and stringy! That also means I need a good product that will help ease styling as well as give me that extra volume and moisture my hair needs. I guess you could say I have that idea in me that the more you pay for the item the better quality you will get. That also goes with store brands. I am more of a brand name person who normally would not give store brands a second look unless I really on a budget and trying to save a few dollars. I can say, I love the look of their new line - it seems fresh and does not have the typical "store brand" look.
Product description from Kroger -

"Designed to make hair look and feel it's best, Mirra Daily shampoos and conditioners are professionally formulated to adapt to your hair's unique needs: Smoothing, Volumizing, and Color Treated. Mirra products contain sunflower extract, soy protein, amino acids, and chicory root, along with other ingredients, to counteract the harsh effects of hard water and restore a healthy PH balance to your hair - allowing your hair to reach its full potential. Styling products provide moisture, shine, and hold."

When I shop for beauty products for my hair, I usually go through a few until I find one that I like, then I will switch it up every now and then to avoid build up. Using the Mirra Shampoo, I loved the smell and felt that it worked good enough to buy again every now and then. Now the conditioner - that's a different story. I need a conditioner that from the time I rinse will leave my hair shiny, silky and easy to brush through. This product did not live up to that. After rinsing the conditioner out - it left my hair feeling rough, full of knots and dry. I was disappointed, but it sadly it was something I expected out of a store brand product. Maybe it will work differently on different types of hair.......but I have to give this product a thumbs down.

**Disclosure - I received the products courtesy of The Kroger Company for review as a part of the Global Influence Network.

Action Art Banners

It's baseball season - a favorite of mine! I have to admit I am not into Professional Baseball, but could not love kids baseball more than anything else! This is my youngest son's third season and he just lives for it. It's great to see him so into something he loves. This is also my third year being the team mom. One of the jobs is to come up with an idea for the team banner. To us a team banner expresses who the team is and gives off a good impression. We personally love airbrushed banners - they look neat, clean and so cool! If you go to www.actionartbanners.com you can see some of their artwork - it's amazing!

Action Art Banners is the largest manufacturer of airbrushed banners in the youth sports industry. They are a family owned business that has been in business for over 15 years. If you are looking for something other than a banner then they have that too. Pennants, tote bags, t-shirts, sweatshirts and so much more! They ship all over the country and are reasonably priced. We got our banner fairly quickly and the team loved it!! It really stands out and gives a good impression of the team.

Wordless Wednesday

another clue to a very special stop we will be making along our road trip........

Baby Safety

Rhoost is a new line of baby safety products. As my own children are older, I have not had to think about baby safety. But, I do remember when they were babies and as a first time mother, being worried about locking the cupboards, keeping the oven shut, and them hitting those sharp table corners!! Back then they were plastic and not very good looking. They were ugly, bulky, and well....just plain tacky!! Rhoost is more fashionable and modern. Fitting in with the decor more, while at the same time protecting our children. Rhoost products are made from a recyclable thermoplastic elastomer, which feels like a rubber - something I can be certain that would not hurt my child if they were to fall against it. With the plastic, the children were still capable of scraping themselves. This new product was easy to use and clean, and withheld the test of my children pulling and twisting at it.

For the sling hub pictured above - a pack of four retails for only $9.99!!

You can visit Rhoost at

Where The Wild Things Are

**Disclosure: Warner Bros provided our family with a preview copy of the movie for review. No other compensation was received.

Where The Wild Things Are - Available on Blu-Ray Combo Pack, DVD, and for Download TODAY! First off I have to say "Wow" this movie was just amazing - nothing I thought it would be. I am one of the few that have never really sat down and read the book. Just from looking at the cover it did not look like something that would be interesting or fun to read. With that said we sat down as a family to watch the movie. With in the first five minutes I had tears in my eyes. I felt for the boy who was feeling so much loneliness. With his imagination this one boy set out for an adventure of a lifetime with memories that will last forever and friendships that will always be thought of. I won't give the ending away if you have not seen this movie yet, but all I can tell you is that my six year old son as well as my five year old daughter were in tears, they just about cried themselves to sleep. I had never seem them showing so much emotion after watching a movie. I was in awe! This is one really touching movie - one that I am so thankful that I took the time to sit down and watch!

About the movie from Warner Bros -

"Where The Wild Things Are follows Max, a rambunctious and sensitive boy who feels misunderstood at home, as he escapes to where the Wild Things are. Max lands on an island where he meets mysterious and strange creatures whose emotions are as wild and unpredictable as their actions and who are desperately longing for a leader to guide them, just as Max longs for a kingdom to rule. When Max is crowned king, he promises to create a place where everyone will be happy. But Max soon finds that ruling his kingdom is not so easy and his relationships prove to be more complicated than he originally thought."

Where The Wild Things Are is available today on Blu-Ray Combo Pack for $35.99 and on single disc DVD for $28.98.

**Today Where The Wild Things Are will also be available ON DEMAND through digital cable, satellite TV, XBOX 360 and Playstation 3 consoles and it can be downloaded for rental or purchase on iTunes and Amazon Video On Demand.
