Sneaky treats to replace super-sized sweets

We are an active family. Both our youngest kids are involved with sports, so keeping fueled is so important! With Baseball season around the corner, kids are excitedly practicing their plays and Moms are obsessively mapping out schedules.  As parents, we sometimes spend so much time trying to focus on getting everyone where they need to be on time along with making sure they have all their equipment, we often forget the most important thing our kids need - to stayed hydrated and fueled!  You'll def want to skip the sugary filled drinks and opt for water.  As far as snacks please don't send your children with super-sized Snickers, Snickers and bags of chips!  Why not sneak in a sweet, all natural, superfood snack?  After all, diabetes and obesity are on the rise among kids.

Tasty, superfood snacks designed to fuel kids with organic fruits and vegetables.  Not only are they a healthy alternative to sugar-laden candies and other franken-foods that pop up around this time of year, but they are fun, crumb-free snacks that introduce kids to fruits such as mangoes, acai, yumberries, and pomegranates.  They serve as a great source of essential vitamins, and some flavors, including Creamy Banana Chocolate (our newest, with the least amount of sugar!) come packed with seven grams of protein.  Our youngest son is thirteen and plays club baseball, so while we play year round, we are coming upon the busiest time of year.  As a growing, active boy, he needs something that's going to give him some protein, not something filled with sugar, which will only weigh him down.  We tried these drinks for two weeks, during games and after practises.  He loved them! While they are def better cold, they don't have to be refrigerated.  Which makes them easy to throw in his baseball bag, cooler or even my purse!  It was quick, a healthier option and he seemed to enjoy them!  His favorite - Creamy Banana Chocolate!

Opening Date Set for Newest Chick-fil-A in Vegas

Chick-fil-A, Inc. announced the grand opening date of its third restaurant in the Las Vegas area. The restaurant, located at 2477 S. Rancho Drive in Las Vegas is set to open on March 30. The restaurant will be independently owned and operated by local resident Cole Donahoo and will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

The first two just opened not too long ago and the lines have been off the hook! But don't let the crowds deter you! We checked it out to see what the wait time was like.  The line was outside the door and it still took us less than 30 minutes to order! We were very impressed on how quickly and efficiently the crowds were handled! This restaurant opening on Shara is much closer for us and I cannot wait for opening!  From their fresh, handmade daily biscuits to their fresh squeezed lemonade, can't get any better than that! Yum! See you there on March 30th!

Teach Your Kids to Save

You don’t have to wait until your kids are teenagers. You can start talking to them about the basics of money as early as preschool. Here are some tips about how to talk to your kids about money at any age:
  • From ages three to five you can teach kids that money can be exchanged for things. Explain to them the difference between pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.
  • From ages five to nine you can start giving them an allowance. This is also a good time to explain bank accounts and what it means when a bank account earns interest.
  • From ages nine to 13 you can help them open a savings account. Encourage them to save their allowance towards a goal (a new toy or a DVD). You might even consider setting up a matching savings plan like most companies do with a 401(k). This is also a good time to start talking to them about the idea of keeping a minimum balance based on the savings account requirement. You can also introduce the concept of keeping savings in case of emergency. Even though they won’t need to pay for an emergency at such a young age, you can explain the importance of keeping a nest egg.
  • From ages 13 to 15 you can expand your children’s allowance to include more expensive items like clothes or gifts for friends. This is also a good time to introduce entrepreneurship. Encourage your kids to earn their own money with jobs for neighbors and friends.  Arrange for them to have an ATM card so they can withdraw money from their savings account.
  • From ages 15 to 18 and up you can help your children open a checking account with a debit card. Teach them how to manage their account online or with mobile banking. You can even go old school and show them how to use a check register. This is also a good time to talk fiscal responsibility about when they go off to college. Be very clear about what expenses you will pay for which ones they will cover.
Explaining money management to your kids can start out with something as simple as giving them an allowance. If you talk to them regularly, teach by your own fiscally responsible example and give them the right tools, you will do more than teach them about money basics. You will instill in them a respect for earning and saving money that will hopefully set them on a path to being financially independent and responsible in adulthood.

Southern Nevada's first Chick-fil-A

Guess who just opened up their doors this past week to the Las Vegas Valley?  Yup - you guessed it!  Chick-fil-A opened up their very first location in the Vegas Valley this past week.  In fact they didn't just open one, but two - the same day!  Many of us locals would have to drive out to one of our surrounding states just to get a taste of this favorite take out.  We had an opportunity to tour the restaurant and get a taste of their famous menu before the doors opened to the public.  As I pulled up, I had to keep reminding myself that I was still in Vegas!

It was such an odd, but good feeling pulling up and not being out of town!  As I walked in I could smell the aroma of freshly coated chicken and their famous crunchy waffle fries.  There was a display of some of their most popular items, which I could not wait to get into!

As we took a tour of their kitchen, we learned some pretty interesting facts that we thought we'd share to help introduce Chick-fil-A to those in the Las Vegas area that haven't been yet.

  • 90% of their breakfast customers come through the drive through
  • Their famous lemonade is three simple ingredients - water, lemons and sugar
  • Biscuits are made fresh daily
  • Chick-fil-A has been voted the #1 drive through in the US several times
  • 60% of their lunch & dinner customers come through the drive through
  • Chick-fil-A was the first to take the bone out of the filet creating a bone-free chicken sandwich!

This was my lunch - if you're trying to go more the healthy route this year, don't count out Chick-fil-A! They have plenty of salads and healthy options available like grilled chicken and their Superfood Salad (which is a new favorite of mine!) It's chopped broccolini and kale blend, tossed in a sweet and tangy maple vinaigrette and topped with dried sour cherries, served with a roasted nut blend on the side.

I also had a chance to sit down with the new owner of one of the restaurant's, Dave Taplin.  Dave isn't a newbie to Chick-fil-A, in fact he's from Arizona, where he previously owned a franchise in Mesa, Arizona.  As a Mom, I wanted to get Dave's plan to reach out to local families in the community.  He is a Father of four children - all under eight years old, so he def knows what it's like to be a parent and in touch with the community.  Dave went over how his restaurant is very family friendly - adding that their are no TV's to distract family time.  They even have placemats that will literally stick to the table, so you don't have to keep pulling off that sliding placemat! Ah - and guess what? You can even trade your child's toy in for an ice cream! While I wasn't able to get any definite plans of what Dave has in the future as far as Mom groups or speciality nights go, I do trust that he know's exactly what he's doing and do not have any doubt that there will be plenty in store.  What is even more exciting is that his wife, Dana is the marketing director for their location.  I love that! A strong couple, who has a family of their own, working together to invest in our community!  That is just awesome!

Welcome to Southern Nevada Chick-fil-A!!
