How to Keep Your Kids Learning This Summer with Free STEM Program

According to a recent article by Oxford Learning, students lose 2-3 months of reading skills over the summer on average. “A majority of students (56 percent) want to be involved in a summer program that “helps kids keep up with schoolwork or prepare for the next grade,”” said Ruth Peters Ph.D.  GSK’s Science in the Summer is a free STEM program for children in underserved communities across the country. This year’s summer enrichment program “The Science of Me”, sponsored by global healthcare company GSK and administered by one of the nation’s premier centers of science education, The Franklin Institute, engages children in science, technology, engineering and math through hands-on learning and exploration. Overall, this program will aid 26,000 students nationwide during the summer months.

Celebrate National Cheese Day with GIORDANO’S

Today, June 4th is National Cheese Day!!!  I think this honestly applies to all of us whether we want to admit it or not.  Who doesn't love cheese in one way or another.  There's no better way to enjoy gooey globs of cheese than to have a greasy, fresh hot pizza!  We were invited out to Giordano's Pizzeria to celebrate National Cheese Day today.   This was a first for us at Giordano's but I am a huge fan of deep dish pizza so knew we were made for each other!  Just a heads up if you are planning on trying their famous Chicago style deep dish, they do make it fresh which is about a 45 minute wait.  But that leaves plenty of time to have a salad or try some of their amazing appetizers.  Something that caught my eye was lightly fried lemon peel - what! Yes!  Sounds really odd, but oh so amazing! Lemon peel is actually really good for you. This does have a strong lemon taste but you have to try it. So good!  It comes in their appetizer Calamari and More which includes tender calamari mixed with artichoke fritters, lemon rings, banana peppers and fennel all lightly fried and served with their house made marinara sauce.

After forty five minutes of good conversation and mouth watering appetizers our pizza was on it's way.  We could not wait to do the cheese pull challenge, in fact there was a little argument at the table on who was going to get to do it first lol!  My husband won......

Epic right!  Guess who got dibs on that gooey, cheesy piece of pizza - yup that's right - me!

Their signature mozzarella cheese is specially produced for Giordano's by Wisconsin cheese makers using only the very best milk from hard working local farmers.  It is aged to perfection and freshly shredded in house every day to ensure rich, creamy, buttery flavor and the legendary Giordano's melt.

Giordano's is inviting cheese lovers all over the Las Vegas area to share your best cheese pull on social media with the hashtag #Giordanos for a chance to win a $25 gift card.   To further the celebration, Giordano's is offering 20% off any restaurant order today only!  Missed celebrating today? Don't worry you can still get $5 off a frozen pizza shipment online for a week, now through June 11th.

Mary Poppins Returns

Mary Poppins Returns by Disney came out yesterday.  I grew up watching the original so I was really looking forward to this movie and let me tell you - it did not disappoint!  I took my teenagers to see it as well.  I do have mixed thoughts regarding the generation today enjoying the movie.  My kids enjoyed it, but they just thought it was just "okay" and a little long with too much music.  I honestly see that as being an issue with kids today.  It is a little long for someone who is not familiar with the original Mary Poppins and who doesn't have a connection with the movie.  Now on the other hand, for someone like myself who grew up watching Mary Poppins and singing the songs - no doubt you will absolutely love this movie!  Disney did a fabulous job on Mary Poppins Returns!  Although it was a little long, they hit every point and connected it spot on to the original.   I found myself laughing, crying and smiling throughout the movie as the warmth and memories it brought was comforting.  The cast as well fit so perfect, I really can't say enough about this movie.  If you are over thirty and grew up watching the original Mary Poppins, this will warm your heart! GREAT job Disney!!!

How to Prevent Home Fires During Christmas
By: The Experts at Safer Alarms
It seems as if every year the holiday season begins earlier.  Along-side Halloween costumes in the stores are dancing Santa’s and reindeer. But in our mad dash to get our home decorated for the holidays and organize the gatherings, it’s easy to forget about the additional fire hazards that come with this time of year.  To keep your family safe, keep these tips in mind to prevent fires:
Christmas Tree - Let’s face it, bringing a 4 ft. to 8 ft. tree into your home that is only being held up by a small stand with four screws is just asking for trouble with a toddler in the home.  I can remember at least one time in my childhood hearing the tree come crashing to the floor in the middle of the night.  Toddlers will naturally be attracted by this new item in your home and equally fascinated by the lights.   To prevent the tree from falling wrap green gardening twine around the mid-section of the tree.  There are extension gates that can be assembled as large as you require.  Once you have placed the lights on the tree, be sure to tape any extra length of cord directly to the wall to prevent your toddler from pulling on it and pets from biting it and potentially causing a fire.
Ornaments - While you may have many family ornaments that you have used to decorate your tree in the past, store any glass ones away for the next few years.  Along with the potential risk of broken glass cutting your child, a curious toddler will try to put one in her mouth.  Make sure smaller ornaments are placed towards the top of the tree and consider decorating the bottom with ribbons or larger cloth-covered ornaments.
Christmas Tree Lights – Never attach more than three strands of lights together. Pick up some extension cords and read the directions carefully for the best way to light your tree. Some stores may even carry cords designed to go up the trunk of your tree to individually light each strand. Also, make sure you keep them high enough so that your pets don’t think they’re chew toys! Electrical fires are no way to start your holiday season.
Fireplace - Nothing is cozier than a roaring fire but make sure children are aware of the dangers.  If you have a fireplace in your home, make sure you securely fasten gate or screen in front to protect your area rugs, carpets and furniture from loose embers, and to keep your children safe from burns. Make sure you have a fire extinguisher nearby at all times.
Cooking - Whether your kids are helping you bake a gingerbread house or just heating up a cup of hot chocolate, establish some safety rules.  Make sure they understand to stay away from hot appliances or plugging in electrical appliances with wet hands.
Candles – It’s easy to forget and leave a candle burning when you go to bed. There’s also the chance of a taper candle falling over and igniting a table cloth or drape.  There is a wide array of scented electric candles that will look just as beautiful and be much safer to use.

TOY STORY 4 Teaser Trailer

I am so excited to share with you that Woody and the rest of the toys are back for an all-new adventure in “Toy Story 4,” welcoming new friends to Bonnie’s room, including a reluctant new toy called Forky. “Like most people, I assumed that ‘Toy Story 3’ was the end of the story,” said director Josh Cooley. “And it was the end of Woody’s story with Andy. But just like in life, every ending is a new beginning. Woody now being in a new room, with new toys, and a new kid, was something we have never seen before. The questions of what that would be like became the beginning of an entertaining story worth exploring.”

But Forky insists that he is NOT a toy! An actual spork-turned-craft-project, Forky is pretty sure that he doesn’t belong in Bonnie’s room. Unfortunately, every time he tries to get away, someone yanks him back into an adventure he’d rather skip. “The world of Toy Story is built upon the idea that everything in the world has a purpose,” said Cooley. “A toy’s purpose is to be there for its child. But what about toys that are made out of other objects? Forky is a toy that Bonnie made out of a disposable spork, so he’s facing a crisis. He wants to fulfill his purpose as a spork, but now has a new toy purpose thrust upon him.”

Filmmakers called on comedian Tony Hale to provide the voice of Forky. “It’s a huge thrill to be part of the Toy Story family,” he said. “But it’s going to take a while for it to really sink in.”

We just got back from the most amazingly beautiful vacation!! We celebrated my birthday in Oahu and loved it so much we are literally already planning next years trip! INCREDIBLES 2

Highly Recommend!  Must See!

I'm not big on sequels, but they outdid themselves on this one.  Even though it was a cartoon, it felt like I was watching a action movie.  My teenagers even enjoyed it much more than the first one!  I am not going to give anything away, you have to go see it!  Get ready to be on the edge of your seat and laughing throughout the entire movie!  You might have a new favorite Incredible! Mom approved and I'm telling you - take your family, you will thoroughly enjoy it!

In “Incredibles 2,” Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is called on to lead a campaign to bring Supers back, while Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) navigates the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell), Dash (voice of Huck Milner) and baby Jack-Jack—whose super powers are about to be discovered. Their mission is derailed, however, when a new villain emerges with a brilliant and dangerous plot that threatens everything. But the Parrs don’t shy away from a challenge, especially with Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) by their side. That’s what makes this family so Incredible.

Written and directed by Brad Bird (“Iron Giant,” “The Incredibles,” “Ratatouille”) and produced by John Walker (“The Incredibles,” “Tomorrowland”) and Nicole Paradis Grindle (“Sanjay’s Super Team” short, “Toy Story 3” associate producer), Disney•Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” busts into theaters on June 15, 2018.

NOTES:
Released in 2004, “The Incredibles” grossed more than $633 million worldwide. Earning more than $70 million opening weekend, “The Incredibles” posted the second-largest opening at the time for an animated feature.

Director Brad Bird helmed “The Incredibles,” which won an Academy Award® for best animated feature film of the year. Bird also directed Pixar Animation Studios’ 2007 Oscar®-winning film “Ratatouille,” as well as 2011’s live-action film “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol,” 2015’s “Tomorrowland” and 1999’s BAFTA-winning animated film “The Iron Giant.”

Voice Cast: Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Sarah Vowell, Huck Milner, Samuel L. Jackson, Brad Bird, Bob Odenkirk, Catherine Keener, Jonathan Banks, Sophia Bush, Isabella Rossellini   Directed by: Brad Bird   Produced by: John Walker, Nicole Paradis Grindle
