Tomorrow!!  Tuesday, November 15, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., The Mob Museum, The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, will commemorate the anniversary of the Kefauver Committee hearing, which took place in its building on November 15, 1950, by offering free admission during regular operating hours for Nevada residents. Non-Nevada residents will receive buy-one, get-one admission that day. Kefauver Day at The Mob Museum is sponsored by Zappos.

Kefauver Day at The Mob Museum is held each year to raise awareness of the significance of the U.S. Senate Special Committee to Investigate Organized Crime in Interstate Commerce. Launched by U.S. Senator Estes Kefauver, the outcome of these hearings played a pivotal role in advancing the nation’s fight against organized crime, as well as the development of Las Vegas as the nation’s gaming capital.

Among the Museum’s artifacts related to Sen. Kefauver are coonskin cap, gavel and briefcase, all of which are on loan from the University of Tennessee Libraries, Knoxville, Special Collections. Sen. Kefauver first adopted a coonskin hat as a trademark during his 1948 campaign for election to the U.S. Senate. He continued to use the coonskin cap as a trademark throughout his political career which included unsuccessful campaigns for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1952 and 1956 and an unsuccessful campaign for the vice presidency as Adlai Stevenson’s running mate in 1956. All three objects, along with others related to the hearings, are on display in the Kefauver Room, located just outside the Museum’s historic courtroom where the Las Vegas Kefauver Committee hearing took place.

Save Money and Time in Your Classroom this Holiday Season: 7 Simple Hacks for Teachers

It seems like the school season just started. However, with the first half of the year almost behind us and the holidays fast approaching, teachers everywhere are busy redecorating their classrooms. With images of turkeys and colorful leaves, snowflakes and bright lights, the holiday spending is in full force.
DIY projects are a great way to save money and spend less during the holiday season. MyPrintly offers a plethora of DIY crafts, printables and inspiration, perfect for the classroom or home. We’d love to see your creations! Be sure to share them with us by using the hashtag #MyPrintly on social media.
Keep reading for some great classroom hacks that will save you time and money, as well as how you can dress up your classroom for the holidays- and year round, for less!
Save Money and Time this Holiday Season: 7 Classroom Hacks for Teachers
  1. Preserve materials you’ll use multiple times. Shannon Lisowe, from Speechy Musings, laminates useful visuals, pages, and books and stores them in a binder to make it easy to grab and go from year to year. “It’s a little more cost and time upfront, but it will absolutely save you in the long run!” This is especially great for holiday items you only need once a year.
  2. Reduce printing costs with a subscription service. Many teachers have printers in their classrooms but very little budget to print. With all the wonderful holiday printables and crafts to make, many teachers end up printing up to 300+ pages per month. Enter HP Instant Ink (i.e. Subscription Service). HP’s Instant Ink program allows subscribers to save time and money by delivering ink cartridges at a fraction of the cost of store-bought ink, right to your door. This program offers a month-to-month subscription and you can cancel anytime. Plans start as low as $2.99/month which can save teachers TONS of money on ink. Extra savings on ink means extra money for your holiday budget! Score!

“I do not feel guilty about printing games and activities for my students because I am not having to spend a fortune out of my own pocket!” Chandra Dills, from Teaching with Crayons and Curls.

Your compatible HP printer communicates low ink levels to HP so ink is delivered to your door before you run out. “My favorite thing about HP Instant Ink is the fact that not only is the ink inexpensive, but it is shipped to your door so you never have to leave your house!” Lauren Shirk, a K-3 Reading Intervention teacher from A Teachable Teacher.

There are so many perks packaged into the HP Instant Ink program that extend beyond ease and convenience. For example, Jennifer Kadar, from SimplyKinder, has referred enough friends to receive free ink until 2020! “It’s effortless.” With the HP Instant Ink Refer-a-Friend program, you and the friend you refer receive a free month of ink. The best part is the amounts of referrals are unlimited! “The HP Instant Ink program is made for teachers. Period.”

  1. HP Instant Ink also offers great options for teachers who are tired of only printing in black and white to save on costs. Kristin Oldham, from A Teeny Tiny Teacher, loves the aspect of being able to print in color too, for the same price. “I love how I don’t have to prioritize what I will print in color or what I will print from home vs. school.” You can learn more about HP Instant Ink by visiting www.hpinstantink.com.
  1. Organize your space. Vanessa Levin, from Pre-K Pages, recommends a well-organized and fully functional classroom environment where materials necessary for teaching and learning are easily accessible to both teachers and students. “Clear the clutter. If it hasn’t been used in one year, toss it. Lighten the load to make more time for teaching and learning.”
  2. Be a smart shopper. Finding the perfect décor items for your classroom is costly. Cut back on costs by visiting local thrift shops. “You’ll be amazed at how many goodies you can find for little to nothing for your classrooms.” Traci Bender, special education teacher for grades 3-5 from The Bender Bunch.
  3. Stock up during any sale events. There are many opportunities throughout the year to stock up. Don’t forget that purchasing holiday items is always cheaper after the holiday is over. Be sure to raid your local stores for that excess clearance inventory! Kallie Lerchbacker, who is going into her third year of teaching says, “Don’t buy everything all at once. It’s okay to have a classroom that is not decorated like a Pinterest classroom. Also, it’s good to make/print your own centers because the stations from the teacher stores are very expensive.”
  4. Hone your parent-teacher presentation. Teachers like Vanessa Levin from Pre-K Pages, admit that parent-teacher nights can be nerve-wracking. Calm your nerves by planning and anticipating parents’ questions. Also, don’t be afraid to sprinkle in some fun. Parents are nervous too and if you have an icebreaker or specialty décor, it will get the conversation started. Vanessa suggests creating a parent handbook to arm yourself with the answers they are looking for. This way you will appear confident and knowledgeable and parents will be at ease knowing their child is in good hands.
  5. Ask for donations. You might be surprised to learn how many of your students’ families have extras around the house that you can use in the classroom. Make a list of all the classroom necessities you might need throughout the year: tissues, hand sanitizer, crayons, glue, etc. and send it home with each student. Sprinkle in some seasonal items so you don’t have to front the money on those too. Even indoor recess activities can be supplied via donations if families have extra puzzles or games sitting around.
Curious about HP Instant Ink, the subscription service mentioned above? You should be! To receive one free month of ink, sign up here. Once you try it, we know you’ll love it! After signing up, be sure to share your own Refer-a-Friend link to earn even more free ink!

Recap of Smith's Food & Drug Holiday Party

Yesterday, Smith's Food & Drug held a holiday party in all of their stores.  Smith's is our go to store, it's right down the street from us and I love their prices!  We have been shopping there for over four years and come to know many of the cashiers and managers.  My favorite thing about Smith's Food & Drug is their customer service.  Not once have I received bad vibes.  They are always willing to go that extra mile, and customer service is big in my book!

So we decided to swing by and "join" in on the fun!  The table above was set up right when you walk into the store.  They were offering cake and juice, as well as raffle tickets that they called out every 15 minutes where you would get to come and spin and win!  Many samples and coupons throughout the store kind of made us not want to leave lol!  We def took our time strolling and just having a good time.    They do have events quite often, so watch for the next one and we will def keep you posted as well.  Also a great time to interact with store associates, try new products and stock up on coupons!
