Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth

With the holidays approaching, more people open up their hearts to those less fortunate, and Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth (NPHY) is offering an easy way to help feed kids in need. The nonprofit organization is launching its annual Plastic Food Drive to provide the more than 11,000 Clark County homeless youth with a hot meal for Thanksgiving and the December holidays.

To meet its goal, NPHY is asking the public to participate – individually or through employee and customer drives – by purchasing and donating fast food restaurant and grocery store gift cards. The requested denominations are $5 or $10 for fast food restaurants and $25 or $50 for grocery stores.

“The holidays can be especially unsettling and scary for homeless youth. They aren’t able to be in the traditional family setting, compounded by the fact they’re always wondering when they’ll eat their next meal,” said Arash Ghafoori, executive director of NPHY, the most comprehensive service provider for homeless teens in Southern Nevada. Without access to stable shelter, a stove or microwave, donation of fast food restaurant and grocery store gift cards is the easiest way to ensure these kids receive a hot meal.”

He added that a $5 fast food restaurant gift card equates to one meal for a homeless teen, and a $25 grocery store gift card provides meals for several days.

Now in its ninth year, this year’s Plastic Food Drive will culminate at a special tailgate party with food, fun games, and a raffle on Saturday, Nov. 21 before the University of Nevada, Las Vegas – San Diego State football game at Sam Boyd Stadium, 7000 E. Russell Road. Entry is free, but donations are required for refreshments and the raffle. Those who bring fast food or grocery store gift cards or other donations will be eligible to win food, game tickets, and other prizes. The event will be co-hosted by NPHY and UNLV, and will take place on the north side of the stadium from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Following the tailgate party, NPHY staff will distribute the gift cards to homeless teens through its Drop-In Center, Safe Place Mobile Crisis Intervention, Independent Living Program, outreach efforts and other touchpoints.

There are a number of ways to get involved with the Plastic Food Drive:
Purchase $5 or $10 gift cards from fast food restaurants.
Purchase $25 or $50 gift cards from local grocery stores.
     Donate online at https://www.gofundme.com/nphypickupthetab15.

Implement an employee or customer Plastic Food Drive by calling 702-383-1332 or visiting www.nphy.org/pfd for information or to get started.

Prior to the tailgate party, gift cards and/or other cash donations can be dropped off at the NPHY Drop-In Center, located at 4981 Shirley Street, south of Tropicana Ave. near UNLV, Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., or at any business in the Village Square Shopping Center, 9400 W. Sahara Ave., during its normal operating hours.

“With the growing number of homeless youth in Southern Nevada, the community’s support for the Plastic Food Drive is more important than ever,” said Ghafoori. “This initiative does make a powerful difference, and we are so appreciative of everyone’s help in feeding these vulnerable kids for the holidays.”

Innovative Contest for Children

Calling All Kid Inventors, Builders and Makers!
Capstone Launches Scrap City with Innovative Contest for Children

Capstone, a leading publisher of children’s books and digital products and services, is thrilled to announce the “Create the Scrappers” contest, to celebrate the publication of their new middle grade story of friendship and adventure, Scrap City.

The “Create the Scrappers” contest invites kids to create their own “Scrapper” - a handmade unique mechanical friend - out of old parts, pieces and things found around the house.  Kids should create a video that shows their Scrapper and describes their creation process, and share it on YouTube using the hashtag #ScrapCity in the title.  The Scrapper can be a character from the book – or any new character kids can imagine.
“Celebrating creation and invention is a big part of what we do, so we couldn’t be more excited to see the increasing number of makerspaces and fab labs in schools across the country,” said Ashley Andersen Zantop, Chief Content Officer at Capstone. “Schools and families can use this contest to compliment and encourage the growing energy around providing children with opportunities to design, experiment, and invent.  We can’t wait to see the amazing creations kids come up with.”

The winner will receive a $250 Michaels’ gift card plus $250 worth of Capstone books. The winning entry will be featured on Capstone’s website and promoted on its social media channels, and the winner and four runners up will also receive personally dedicated copies of Scrap City.

This contest was inspired by the world of Scrap City, the wonderful new middle grade reader by D.S. Thornton. Scrap City is the tale of an underground world populated by “people” made from scraps, and a team of friends’ brave efforts to save them and their world from the crush of civilization. The book was released on October 1st, and is already gathering praise and reviews including:
  • “[An] exciting story which will pique the curiosity of mechanically-minded kids. Clunky robots, centuries-old mysteries and unlikely friendships add intrigue to the already appealing premise of a secret city of scrap people hidden beneath a junkyard. With a perfect blend of emotion and humor, the pages practically turn themselves.” –ForeWord Reviews
  • “Kids will be taken with the pair of plucky young protagonists, and Thornton also crafts a crowd-pleasing, Pixar-style supporting cast along the lines of those in Cars and Wall-E.” –Booklist
  • “The premise is delicious, and the underlying message that warns against consumerism and consumption is admirable.” –Kirkus Reviews
The contest will run from October 15 to December 15, 2015, and is open to children between the ages of 7 and 12.  Complete rules, details and entry form are available here:  http://bit.ly/CreateTheScrappersContest

Fall is Near! Is Your Home Ready?

Can you believe that summer is over? With September in full swing, you may be starting to get into the fall spirit. Cooler weather is drawing near, and it’s time to start thinking about prepping your home for it.

Prepping for cooler weather can ensure that your home is ready for seasons to come. In the Las Vegas valley, the bitter chill of winter can happen almost overnight. It may seem early, but you may be surprised by what some preventative maintenance can do for your budget.

See below for some expert tips to prep your home for a safe and comfortable fall season:

  • Clean Those Gutters: As the fall season begins, the leaves begin to change and fall from the trees. Your gutters are bound to get some extra debris, and could potentially get clogged. To prevent this pain, inspect your home’s roof and gutter system. Ensure that gutters are cleared, or go a step further and install a mesh guard to prevent build-up.

  • Detect for Carbon Monoxide: If you’re planning on firing up your fireplace this fall, get your home checked by a professional, and consider installing a carbon monoxide detector. A detector can alert you to odorless carbon monoxide emitted from furnaces, fireplaces, stoves and other gas-fired appliances.

  • Insulate & Weather Strip: Check your home’s window insulation to ensure heat is not leaking out. Why run your unit this fall and winter if it won't be warming your home? You’ll end up spending more, because the unit will need to work overtime for lost air. Gaps in caulk and weather-stripping can account for 10% of your heating bills, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

  • Maintain your System: Change your filters, and have your ducts cleaned. Changing your air filter can slow down the dirt and debris build up in your HVAC system, and takes only minutes when done by a professional.

  • Adjust Your Blinds: On sunny days, take advantage of the sun to bring in heat. Adjust blinds so they are open and tilted toward the ceiling—but be sure to close the blinds at sundown.

  • Ceiling Fans: Set your ceiling fan in the clockwise position, on low.  The fan will help circulate warm air all around the room.
Find a trusted heating and air conditioning company to help with any safety or energy concerns you may have as we transition into the cooler months. When dealing with electricity and gas, it is always best to call a professional. Follow these maintenance's tips and you’ll keep your system running efficiently, and at the lowest cost throughout the fall season.

Allergies - Yuck!

Allergies can affect everyone in one way or another! Did you know that every 3 minutes, a food allergy reaction sends someone to the emergency department – the last thing parents want is for one of those visits to be their child.  Luckily my family only has seasonal allergies to the Santa Ana winds and all the pollen it brings up, but I know plenty of parents that do have children with allergies to food substances.  This is a great graphic, if you save it to your phone, it's always good to reference!
