One Week Away - Winter Jam 2017

Exactly one week from today is Winter Jam 2017 at The Orleans Arena here in Vegas! We've been featuring the artists who will be performing this year and we are down to the last four!

Newsong

Newsong has been around for over thirty years! They have had many accomplishments over the years including eight GMA Dove Award nominations and a Grammy nomination for "The Christmas Shoes".  Make sure if you watch that video, you have a box of kleenex with you! Such a touching song, one of my favorite songs for the holiday season!  They are also the founders of Winter Jam in which they started back in 1995.

Mac Powell

Mac Powell is best known for his part in the band Third Day; a band he joined his sophomore year in high school. Over the past 25 years Third Day has helped shape Christian music, selling over 10 million albums, earning four Grammy awards, one American Music Award, 24 Dove Awards, and they have been inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame! Mac Powell has now started a solo collection of country music, a special treat this year at Winter Jam.  Check out "Carry You", one of my favorites from his self-titled solo country debut album.

What I love about this year's Winter Jam, is that no matter what kind of music you enjoy, there is a little bit of everything in store!

15 Doctor Recommended “To Do’s” to Fight the Flu

As we head into flu season there are many things we can do to “flu proof” ourselves. Regardless of whether you choose to get a flu vaccine or not, there are things we can do to heighten our chances of not getting sick this winter. Dr. Christopher Calapai, a New York based Osteopathic Physician board certified in family medicine, and anti-aging medicine provided us with a comprehensive list of 15 to do’s to fight the flu.

1.     Keep your surroundings clean, wipe surfaces at work, keep your cell phone clean. According to the CDC viruses can survive on a surface for up to 8 hours

2.     Wash your hands frequently and use a hand sanitizer. Remember the workplace and public spaces are a hotbed for germs. This is where the hand washing comes into play.

3.     Increase intake of vitamin D, C, E and A. Include foods such as red bell peppers (add to salads), sweet potatoes, chicken soup, salmon and garlic. Research shows that keeping vitamin D levels at 80 ng/ml or so decreases the risk of catching the flu and swine flu.

4.     Bring your own lunch to work where you can control food prep and ensure surfaces are clean.

5.     Get a full night's sleep. When you feel run down you're more susceptible to illness.

6.     Work from home when feeling sick. These days it's easier for people to work from home at the slightest signs of cold or flu.

7.     Eat kimchi! It’s delicious and a great probiotic which boost immunity.

8.     Add mushrooms to your meal. Packed with selenium they’re an immunity booster.

9.     Sip green or black tea rich in polyphenols and flavonoids which ward off illness as well as L-theanine,
an immunity boosting amino acid. Green and black tea are also packed with polyphenols and flavonoids.

10.  Munch on sweet potato fries which are high in vitamin which helps us fight off bacteria and viruses.

11.  Don’t touch your face especially the eyes. The average person touches their face around 15 times
per hour! It’s something we do unconsciously so if we can be more aware of face touching the more we can stop.

12.  Soup it up! Chicken veggie noodle or ginger garlic soup fights flu and sinus infection.

13.  Exercise regularly! Doing 30 minutes of moderate cardio per day is optimal to enhance the performance of infection fighting white blood cells.

14.  Go hands free on the smartphone. When we put our phones down and then pick them up or touch them this is where viruses can spread. Using earbuds and cleaning the phone with a devise friendly cleaner will help.

15.  Lose the booze. You really want to cut back on alcohol consumption during flu season. It dehydrates us and lowers our immunity so our ability to fight off virus is impaired.

UnReal Chocolate - The Perfect Halloween Handout

*Disclosure: Product was provided to help facilitate this feature. No monetary compensation was received.

Once upon a time, there were two kids whose parents really didn't want them eating their favorite chocolate candies.  Moms, do you blame them!? No much of a story there, but it made these brothers dream (only 10 & 13 at the time); could you remake these favorites without all the bad stuff?  A thousand recipes later (for real), they cracked the code to making some of the best tasting chocolate snacks every. Yes, I of course had my doubts as most I'm sure do.  How could something more healthy for you taste just as good as those popular chocolate brands?  I was floored! They are not just as good - they are way better!  I'm hooked!

Just the facts

  • Unreal chocolate snacks were inspired by the foods Nicky and Kris loved most, like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and M&M’S, but are made without any junk, way less sugar, and only the finest ingredients.
  •  All Unreal chocolate snacks are Non-GMO Project Verified, vegan*, and made with only Fair Trade Certified, sustainable, gluten free and organic ingredients. *Except for Unreal’s Milk Chocolate Gems, which are not vegan.
  •  The gem shells are colored with vegetable extracts (beet juice, turmeric, carrot juice) instead of artificial coloring.
  •  All snacks contain less than 6g sugar.
  • A variety of snacks are available: Dark Chocolate Almond Butter Cups, Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups, Dark Chocolate Crispy Quinoa Peanut Butter Cups, Dark Chocolate Covered Peanut Gems, Dark Chocolate Crispy Quinoa Gems, Milk Chocolate Gems.
  •  The average retail price is $4.99 per bag.

THIS WEEKEND: Neon Museum Celebrates Fifth Anniversary

Image

Anniversary Events Scheduled for Oct. 28

The Neon Museum turns five years old on Saturday, Oct. 28. In commemoration of this milestone occasion, it will offer the public a variety of opportunities to celebrate its past successes as it looks toward a dynamic future.

1 to 7 p.m.: Free self-guided access to the Neon Boneyard, food trucks, cake, crafts, paper flower creation celebrating the “Day of the Dead.” Flowers will be used to decorate an altar created by artist Favela in memory of prominent sign designer Raul Rodriguez. Rodriguez designed the Flamingo sign that resides in the Boneyard and he earned national recognition for his Rose Parade float designs.

1 to 4 p.m. “Family Fiesta” event presented by artist Justin Favela in the Boneyard. "Family Fiesta" incorporates Favela’s real-life family, food, drinks and music in an unconventional outdoor setting. The public is encouraged to participate in the celebration by engaging in games, dances, music, cuisine and piƱata time. In "Family Fiesta," the event is taken out of its traditional context (a cookout in a backyard or a park) to highlight people’s expectations of a fiesta while, at the same time, dismantling notions of location and institutional inclusion.

8 p.m. Two-Hour Open-Top Bus Tour through Downtown Las Vegas and the northern stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard, highlighting classic signs from the Neon Museum collection. The evening concludes with a special nighttime tour of the Neon Boneyard focusing on the museum’s conservation and restoration efforts ($50 per person).

For more information about the Neon Museum’s fifth anniversary festivities and to make reservations for ticketed events, visit www.neonmuseum.org/happenings or call (702) 387-6366.
