Share your outdoor photos from National Get Outdoors day with #ForestFotog

June 11th was National Get Outdoors Day!  Remember how easy it was to spend time in nature growing up? Today it can seem hard to break free and get out there to share that same experience with your kids. But it's worth it -- and nature is closer than you think.
Every neighborhood has a #Naturehood. To find a neighborhood park or green space near you, visit DiscoverTheForest.org.  These “naturehoods” are just a short-drive away, making it easy for families to unplug from the daily routine and reconnect with nature.

Populations have shifted away from rural settings to metropolitan areas, with over 80% of Americans living in cities, and with fewer connections than ever to natural areas. DiscoverTheForest.org highlights that urban forests offer many of the same benefits as national forests, but they’re right in the neighborhood. Beyond the swings, slides and clearings, there are trails, trees, wildlife and water just waiting for the urban dweller.

Research has shown that children who play outside have lower stress levels and more active imaginations, become fitter and leaner, develop stronger immune systems and are more likely to become environmentally conscious in the future. According to campaign research done by Euro RSCG, 88 percent of children today say they like being in nature, and 79 percent wish they could spend more time there.

DiscoverTheForest.org features an interactive map tool that enables users to search for nearby forests and parks, and filter by zip code and desired activities. Free outdoor activities are also available for download and printing, which you can take the next time you visit.  So, what areyou waiting for?  Get up and get out toDiscover the Forest for yourself!  #ForestFotog

Discover the Forest is a non-profit public service campaign created by the U.S. Forest Service and the Ad Council with the primary goal of inspiring kids and their parents to re-connect with nature. The campaign brings to life the joy and excitement kids have when they discover the wonders of nature, helping create lasting memories, interest in their environment and a lifelong relationship with it. The campaign website, www.DiscoverTheForest.org, includes an interactive tool that enables users to search for nearby forests and parks, as well as downloadable activities for them to print and take with them when they visit. The campaign also features online communities on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest.

Swimming with Faith Book Review

**Disclosure:  Booklook Bloggers has provided us with a complimentary copy of this book  to help facilitate this review/feature.

I feel so blessed that my two younger children (11 and 13) love to read!  Especially my daughter, who you will always find in her room, relaxing and indulging in a good book!  Talk about a proud "Mom Moment"!   Her latest venture was Swimming with Faith: The Missy Franklin Story.  Missy Franklin is one of the most talented swimmers in the world. She is a four-time Olympic gold medalist and currently holds the world record in the 200-meter backstroke and American records in both the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke. She was Swimming World’s World Swimmer of the Year and the American Swimmer of the Year in 2012. This story tells of her rise in fame and humbleness in the sport.

My daughter plays softball and she really enjoyed reading this book.  Although it was not her sport, it really is good for anyone involved in a competitive sport.  My daughter is 11 years old and read this book straight through.  What my daughter got out of this book - "This book tells me to not give up on my dreams and it is never to young to start something."

Affordable, Encouraging book for any young reader!  KID APPROVED!

Father's Day Gift Idea: The Joke Book Only Dad Could Love

We’ve all been there. That classic moment when Dad tells a joke, followed by an awkward silence and an eye roll, drawn-out groan, or “Oh, DAD!”  Our family absolutely loves to joke around and be funny!  After all, it's much more fun to go through life happy and laughing than anything else, right!?  Introducing “The Ultimate Book of Dad Jokes,” a new book featuring 1,001+ punny jokes your pops will love telling over and over and over...

With this massive collection of one-liners and oh-so-clever quips, no dad will ever lack groan-inducing material to make his kids (and spouse) facepalm.  This book includes such winners as:
  • ”Fish are probably the most musical of all non-human critters because of their scales.”
  • ”Sign language interpreters have to lean sideways to translate something in italics.”
  • ”After Humpty Dumpty recovered from his fall, he was just a shell of his former self.”
  • ”Supposedly, if you have a dictionary in the house, you’ll never be at a loss for words.”

The book is broken down into categories like Occupations, Sports, Famous Names and Events, Military, just to name a few. I do have to warn you, the author must have loved cows lol!  There are a ton of jokes pertaining to cows. My husband has this book next to his chair and always ready to go when the kids want to come at him.  Lately we seem to be having "joke" competitions in our home.

Kid tested and approved, this book is the perfect Father’s Day gift as well as a must-have for all wordsmiths and pun-lovers.
