Keepsake Kitchen Diary

*Disclaimer:  Product was provided at no charge to help facilitate this feature.

Growing up I remember that my Mom very seldom cooked.  I was raised on fast food. Once I got a bit older, I turned to my Grandmother (who was like a Mom to me) to learn and pick up tid bits along the way.  Everything I learned to cook, I learned from her.  Her famous fudge recipe is my favorite.  It's been passed down along the family chain.  As I got older and had my own kids, every time we would go to make Grandma's fudge, we would have to scurry around the kitchen trying to find the index card we had wrote the recipe on.  I can't tell you how many times I have lost that card and have had to call my Uncle for the recipe again!  With the one-of-a-kind Keepsake Kitchen Diary by Lily & Val, you can capture all the little memories along side your favorite recipes.  I absolutely love this book!!

It's the perfect cookbook to pass down to your loved ones as a family treasure for years to come! With Mother's Day this weekend, this could be the perfect gift to start a new tradition.  They have combined a recipe keeper with a journal to record the precious momories, moments and stories associated with food.  In addition to being functional, the book is beautifully and thoughtfully designed.
The Keepsake Kitchen Diary includes these unique features:

  • Thoughtful organization with room for up to 200 recipes
  • Divided into six sections
  • Pockets included for storing photos and special tokens
  • 12 tear-out recipe cards to share
  • Beautiful hand-drawn illustrations
  • Durable binding and coated covers to protect from light spills
I highly recommend this product!!!  See these inspiring testimonials of how customers are using the Keepsake Cookbook!

Guest Post: 5 Tips for First-Time T-Ball Parents

I am a baseball Mom! My youngest son has been playing ball for nine years now.  There nothing better than spending my weekends at the ball park watching my son interact with others, learn the game, sportsmanship, how to lose and so much more!  This book is great for young ones about to take that step.  It teaches them a bit about the game and to just get out and have fun!  I highly recommend this book to anyone thinking about getting their child into t-ball!  Author Kevin Christofora has provided us with a guest post below, outlining five tips that can help you survive that first season!

*Sponosred Guest Post provided by Kevin Christofora, link http://thehometownallstars.com/

Now that spring is upon us, many parents are preparing for their first Little League or T-Ball season.  At first, it can be overwhelming, but, with a little planning and some veteran advice, you can ensure that you and your child get the most fun out of the season, with the fewest headaches.  Many parents of the T-ball-aged kids have the most to learn, but many routines are very similar to other ages.

Here are five tips that can help you survive your first season:

(1)   Leave enough time to get dressed.

Make sure that you budget enough time for your child to get dressed.  Remember that they will have new pants, long knee-high socks, a uniform shirt, and... where did that hat go?  It’s much easier to set everything out the night before, so not only are you not searching the house for your child’s hat, you also don’t discover that you forgot to throw their shirt in the dryer.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve looked all over the house only to discover that the shirt got mixed in the dresser drawer with the regular shirts, that one of my children left their hat in the car, or even searched everywhere to discover that they forgot to wear their hat home from the last game.

Also, make sure to set out their cleats as close to the door as possible.  It’s important to keep them somewhere that they will be easy to find, but not somewhere that your child will track mud through your house.

(2) Teach your kids to be organized.

Get in the habit of using a small shoestring backpack for kids.  Remember to pack a glove and a water bottle, and make sure that you write their name on both.  Help your child get in the habit of gathering all of their things into their bag after practice.

This is good practice for later years, when they have more to carry. Coaches will help teach responsibility, reminding them that their parents are not responsible for their baseball stuff; they are responsible for themselves.  Coaches are aiding and helping to support tat parent role by teaching respect and responsibility in addition to the sport.

(3)   Don’t forget sunscreen and bug spray.

Sunscreen and bug spray can help save you from the woes that come with sunburn and bug bites.   I am not a promoter of the product, however, my favorite bug spray comes from my local hardware store: Woodstock Hardware invented an all-natural bug spray, Bug Be Gone, that they tested in the forests of Central America, and the physical test on human arms out performed all commercial products.   Guaranteed protection....and no chemicals on you or your kids.  In the day and age of the zinka virus, it is important to get quality bug spray.

(4)   Remember to keep your kids fueled for practice.

Keep in mind that older kids are going to have a longer, harder practice, so they will need a larger water bottle than their younger siblings.  All routines need a food plan.  Most weekly baseball requires juggling the parent’s career, what time they get home from work, and preparing to eat before or after the sports activity.  I strongly suggest light, healthy, high-fuel small foods.  Keep the belly growling for more active and eager, aggressive athletes.  Full bellies only promote lazier results on the field.

(5)   Have a game plan for homework and bedtime.

Plan the homework, and bathing routines to work with bedtimes and rest assured, after a hard day running around the fields, your child will be very cooperative at bedtime.

Good luck with your new endeavors, and don’t forget to enjoy the games and the memories that your child is making!

Toss a handful of granola into your muffin or pancake batter to add texture and crunch.

Smith's Taste of Spain

If you are a regular Smith's shopper, you have probably seen this display as you walk in.  If you are not, I would highly encourage you to get there....this week!  Now through Tuesday, April 19th, Smith's is celebrating their Savor World Flavor "Taste of Spain".  I love food and I love to travel. So I was super excited to be invited to a tour and sampling of some of the products they will be offering during the "Taste of Spain" event.

A team of Kroger food explorers personally traveled the regions of Spain and collaborated with local producers and chefs, searching for authentic, yet easy to prepare meal ideas and beverages.  Taste of Spain highlights those products brought back.  Such as seasoned chorizo, smoked paprika garlicky shrimp, freshly harvested extra virgin olive oil, saffron-flavored pella and smooth, fruity Chardonnay from Navarro.  The ultimate foodie event will feature samples, recipe ideas, new food products and events that bring a taste of the Spanish culture of Kroger stores across the country.    You can really get creative with the products and if you aren't sure on some of the terms or need step by step instructions, there are plenty of recipe cards along with the displays to help you through.

One thing I wanted to show you was some of the prices.  When you think ethnic or specialties - you think expensive, right!? Wrong!  In fact this entire display had some of my favorite products!  Chef Jose' Andres potato chips - oh my! Very addicting! They are made with just three simple ingredients - thinly sliced potatoes, extra virgin olive oil and a touch of Himalayan Pink Salt.

So now that you have all this exciting ethnic food from Spain - now what?  Have a party! Invite your family and friends over, after all, dining is a social event in Spain.  It's all about the tapas! What is a tapa? Yes, I had that same question too as before this event, I had no idea.  The word "tapas" means to cover, finger foods originally served on small plates that could be used to cover wine or sherry glasses while socializing.  Today, tapas simply means small plates of food - awesome, right!  If you love to eat - this is for you! Find more information here with help on planning your party!

Now even if you are just not a person who cooks, doesn't even want to try, Smith's still can hook you up!  In their deli section, you can find pre-made products just for you.  Maybe you just don't have time to cook or need a fast meal.  You can find Chorizo & Grilled Peppers, Salmorjo Panzanella, Pasta Bravas and Chicken & Chorizo Paella.   In fact Paella (below) is one of the most popular dishes in Spain.

Don't be drawn back by the name. Paella is really a simple dish to make, while savory and filling and a dish that is very easy to make your own.   During Smith's Taste of Spain event, you can buy the entire kit - this will make it very easy.  Everything you need to make a basic Paella is included form the pan to the olive oil, spices and the rice.  You can always add some shrimp, or chicken.  Make it even easier by picking up a rotisserie chicken from the deli, shredding it and throwing that in there. Add some veggies as well, can always throw your favorites in and that's what is great about the dish, you can make it to your liking.  You can pick up this kit at your local Kroger / Smith's.

I learned so much during the event! Here are some fun facts I learned while attending the sampling.
  • Spain is the 3rd most visit country
  • Spain produces 45% of all olive oil in the world
  • Eating is a social event in Spain - love it!
  • Tapas mean small plates & was originally meant to keep flies / bugs out of cups
  • Spain has been making cheeses for over 5,000 years
Remember this event will end Tuesday, April 19th, so make sure to get in and stock up before these products are gone!  For more details, including recipes and cultural facts please visit www.spanishworldflavor.com.   For my fellow couponers, there are also some offered coupons for this event!
